Blessing the Pets 2024

On October 6, 2024, after our worship service, we had the opportunity to share in our annual BLESSING OF PETS on the parking lot of the church. Numerous folks went home after the service to pick up and bring their pets to church for a special blessing. We also were blessed to have some folks from the surrounding community hear about the Pet Blessing and come with their pets to share in this opportunity. Guests were encouraged to bring donations of pet food for the Santee Food Bank to distribute.

The worship service was themed around our God-given responsibility to be good stewards of creation (“have dominion”), for pets as well as animals of every kind, and even included a hymn called THE ESTUARY ROUND (sung to the tune of Tallis’ Canon) and written by retired pastor Bill Radatz.

Thanks to all who helped with planning and set-up for this event, especially Michele Strand and Sherise Stark. Sherise’s daughter Serenity (who brought their cat for a blessing) provided the inspiration for this event several years ago, instituting a pet food collection at the event for the Santee Food Bank to distribute to their guests as needed.

Each pet blessed received a certificate and a St. Francis medallion for the pet to wear on its collar. Pictures tell the story best - so here we go:

Blessing of the Pets 2022

On December 4, 2022, we shared an opportunity to bless pets - from our congregation and our community. We had a wonderful turn-out of beautiful pets that came to be blessed and receive a certificate of blessing and a medallion featuring St. Francis.

We also collected a shopping cart full of pet food to present to the Santee Food Bank, that can be shared with guests who need food for their whole family household - including their four-legged members! Thnks to all who participated and invited others!

Rest in peace, Maxmilian!

If you have come to our Saturday Community Breakfasts either before or since COVID, you will likely remember seeing Samantha Ryan with her great canine companion, Maxmilian. He was a great dog, trained to voice and even hand signal commands, very gentle and loving. He passed away unexpectedly not long ago. Samantha shares:

Not only was Maxmilian my registered service companion, but he was a certified (working) therapy dog. Years ago, we worked with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients. We loved visiting shut-ins (from church).

For the last five years, Max was certified to work with special needs children. We visited with Santana High School, and interreacted with students who were on the autism spectrum and those with Down’s Syndrome.

In 2014, Maxmilian was nominated and received recognition as an official ambassador for the United States Marine Corps (USMC). We participated in presenting a monthly program at the Veterans’ Museum in Balboa Park. The presentation was on “The History of War Dogs.” We interacted with veterans, the public, and tourists to San Diego.

In eight years, Max brought much happiness and joy to so many. His gentle, loving spirit calmed so many. Truly, a special boy and a gift from God.
